The custom of the Easter candle that we light on the night of the Resurrection has its roots in the early Christian years when the new members of the Orthodox Christian Church were baptized on Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. The Easter candle symbolizes the Light that Jesus Christ brought to the souls of people when he defeated death, darkness and sin by his Resurrection.

"The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world" (John 1:9).

The color of the Easter candle has a dual symbolism. The brown candle we hold on Good Friday during the procession of the Epitaph symbolizes the sorrow and mourning of Orthodox Christians for the Passion and death of Christ. The white color of the candle symbolizes the celebration and joy for the Resurrection of the God-Man.
