The miraculous icon of Virgin Mary Gorgoepikoos, the most famous after Virgin Mary Portaitissa and Virgin Mary Axion Esti, is the ancient wall painting of Panagia located in the Holy Monastery Docheiariou on Mount Athos. According to tradition, in 1646 AD. the monk Nile heard a voice say to him: "Do not pass through here again with torches smoking my icon". The Nile did not pay much attention to the voice. When he heard again the voice, he was blinded.

The blind monk Nile begged the Virgin to heal him and forgive him, as She did. For the third time the voice was heard from the icon telling the monk that his prayer had been heard and that the monks should go to Her for their every need. In fact, She will listen to them quickly because She is called Gorgoepikoos. Throughout Greece there are genuine copies of the sacred icon which performs innumerable miracles. The Gathering of the Most Holy Theotokos of Gorgoepikoos is celebrated on October 1 of each year.
