Saint Barnabas was one of the first Christians and one of the seventy Apostles who sented by Christ to preach the Gospel. He was born in Cyprus and was a Jewish Levite named Joseph. He was a close associate of the Apostle Paul and he had assistant in his tours his nephew, the Evangelist Mark.

According to ecclesiastical tradition, he preached the Gospel in Rome, Alexandria and in other areas. Barnabas became bishop of Salamis in Cyprus and he had a martyr end in Salamis where he died by stoning. He is the founder and protector of the Church of Cyprus. His memory is honored by the Orthodox Christian Church on June 11 of each year.
