Saint Gerasimus of Jordan was born in Lycia in
the 5th century AD. by pious and humble parents. He followed an ascetic life and during his
stay in the Holy Land he founded a coenobitic monastery, in which the monks ate dry food for the first five days of the week. The Saint was very
hardworking with an ascetic spirit.
According to church texts, Gerasimus once managed to tame a lion, a fact that reveals his great virtue. On March 4, 475 AD. he surrendered his soul to God, during the period when Anastasios I was the Patriarch of Jerusalem. In the 19th century, the present majestic monastery of Saint was built, on the ruins of the old monastery he had founded. Fragment of the Holy Relic of the Saint is located in the Monastery of Prousos in Evrytania. His memory is celebrated by the Orthodox Christian Church on March 4 of each year.
Apolytikion of Gerasimus of the Jordan
First Tone
Thou didst prove to be a citizen of the desert, an angel in the flesh, and a wonderworker, O Gerasimus, our God-bearing Father. By fasting, vigil, and prayer thou didst obtain heavenly gifts, and thou healest the sick and the souls of them that have recourse to thee with faith. Glory to Him that hath given thee strength. Glory to Him that hath crowned thee. Glory to Him that worketh healings for all through thee.
