Saint Chrysanthos lived during the time when Numerian was emperor of Rome. He came from Alexandria and was the son of a prominent pagan. The Saint did not embrace the idols but was catechized in Christianity and received Holy Baptism. As soon as his father was informed of the incident, he decided to marry him with an Athenian pagan named Daria. However, Chrysanthos managed with his catechism to convince Daria to embrace Christianity.

The couple spread the Word of God and as a result they submitted to horrific torture by Commander Claudius. However, the Saints remained steadfast in their faith, a fact that provoked the admiration of Claudius who believed in Christ with his family. Eventually, Chrysanthos and Daria were thrown into a pit and buried alive. The Orthodox Christian Church commemorates them on March 19 of each year.

Apolytikion of Saints Chrysanthus and Daria the Martyrs

Fourth Tone

Thy Martyrs, O Lord, in their courageous contest for Thee received as the prize the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. For since they possessed Thy strength, they cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by their prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.
