Saint Polycarp was born in 80 AD. by pious Christian parents, Pagratius and Theodora. He and Saint Ignatius the Theophorus were disciples of Saint John the Theologian. He succeeded Bishop Bucolus on the episcopal throne of Smyrna and was distinguished for his struggle against the heresies of Marcion and Valentine. With his wisdom and theological training, he came to an agreement with the Bishop of Rome Anicetus to settle an issue with the celebration of Easter.

The action of the Saint provoked the hatred of the pagans, as a result of which he was arrested in 167 AD. Polycarp did not deny Christ and remained steadfast in his faith, a fact that caused his martyrdom with a sword. The Orthodox Christian Church commemorates him on February 23 of each year.

Apolytikion of Saint Polycarp the Hieromartyr

Fourth Tone

As a sharer of the ways and a successor to the throne of the Apostles, O inspired of God, thou foundest discipline to be a means of ascent to divine vision. Wherefore, having rightly divided the word of truth, thou didst also contest for the Faith even unto blood, O Hieromartyr Polycarp. Intercede with Christ our God that our souls be saved.
