Saint Pulcheria was born in 399 AD. and was the daughter of King Arcadius and Queen Evdokia and the sister of the emperor Theodosius II. She was proclaimed Augusta in 414 AD and was distinguished for her wisdom. The Saint, with the assistance of the Archbishop of Alexandria Cyril, managed to convene the Third Ecumenical Council that met in Chalcedon in 431 AD which condemned the sect of Patriarch Nestorius.

Poulcheria married Marcian who succeeded Theodosius II to the royal throne of Byzantium. The two of them managed to convene the Fourth Ecumenical Council in the year 451 AD which condemned the heresies of Eutyches and Dioscorus. For the services they offered to the Orthodox Christian Church, Pulcheria and Marcian were canonized. Their memory is commemorated by the Orthodox Christian Church on February 17 of each year.
