The Orthodox Church honors on September 1 the Holy Forty Virgins and Ascetics.

The Holy Forty Virgins did not succumb to the challenges of the tyrant Licinius to worship the idols and witnessed with horrible torture on September 1, the day on which their memory is celebrated, as written in the Month of September: "Memory of women, of virgins and ascetics and Ammun of their deacon and teacher ". By the decision of the tyrant Licinius, "ten were thrown" into the fire, "and eight after their teacher Ammun were beheaded", another ten were finished with a sword "by mouth and heart", six were stabbed with knives and blood iron glowed in the mouth you receive to the Lord they went out ". With these torturous martyrdoms the forty virgins and their teacher Deacon Ammoun ascended to the Lord and now radiate in the firmament of the Church.
