Mount Athos weathered lithography (icon) of Saint Procopius the Great Martyr in pine wood with carved decoration.

Saint Procopius was born in Jerusalem during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. He lost his father at a very young age and his mother Theodosia raised him as a pagan. Procopius became Duke of Alexandria and he was commanded to persecute Christians. On his way to Alexandria he saw a vision and heard a voice say to him: "I am the Crucified Son of God" and as a result he embraced Christianity.

Returning to Jerusalem, he began to preach the word of God. He was beheaded for this action on July 8, 303 AD. by order of the ruler of Caesarea Flavian. Saint Procopius is mentioned in the wedding procession to enlighten the newlyweds. The Orthodox Christian Church celebrates his memory on July 8 of each year.

Apolytikion of Saint Procopius the Great Martyr

Fourth Tone

Thy Martyr, O Lord, in his courageous contest for Thee received the prize of the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. For since he possessed Thy strength, he cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by his prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.
