Saint Philaret was distinguished for his charity and virtue. He was born in the village of Amni of Gangra during the period of Constantine of Porphyrogenetus. He was a farmer in the profession and all his income was distributed to the poor. At some point the Saint lost all his belongings, but endured the calamity that found him without blasphemy. With the few beehives left, he continued to feed the poor. God, seeing his unshakable faith, made him rich and Emperor Constantine honored him with the office of prefect. Philaret then showed more zeal in his charity work.

Shortly before he died, he advised his relatives to live as he lived. The head of the Holy Relic of the Saint is located in the Monastery of Agia Lavra Kalavrita. The Church celebrates his memory on December 1st of each year.

Apolytikion of Philaret the Merciful

Third Tone

From the inner wealth of a divine faith, thou didst deal thy riches to the needy; and thy works of compassion have glorified Christ, the Bestower of mercy, O Philaret; for thy whole life was adorned with a love like His. Intercede for us, O Almsgiver, that He richly grant great mercy and compassion unto us, the poor.
