Saint Irene lived in the 4th century AD. and came from the city of Magedon in Persia. Her original name was Penelope. The affluent parents of the agile Penelope hired the wise teacher Apellianos, to whom they entrusted her education. One night, she saw in her dream an angel of the Lord calling her to become a Christian. The next day she asked her servant, who was a secret Christian, to call a priest to receive the baptism of Christ. This fact angered her pagan father Licinius, who ordered her to be trampled by wild horses. The horses, however, did not bother Irene, but instead one of them attacked and killed Licinius. However, with the prayers of Irene, her father was resurrected and confessed his faith in Christ together with Apellianos.

Zedekiah, the successor of Licinius, who hated Christians to the point of death, ordered to torture the Saint. Irene was miraculously saved and her fame spread throughout the kingdom of Persia. Then the Persian king Savorius, because he could not persuade her to become idolater, ordered her beheaded. But God released Irene, who continued her missionary work until she fell asleep in peace, after much torture and hardship. The Orthodox Christian Church celebrates her memory on May 5 of each year.

Apolytikion of Saint Irene the Great Martyr

Fourth Tone

O Lord Jesus, unto Thee Thy lamb doth cry with a great voice: O my Bridegroom, Thee I love; and seeking Thee, I now contest, and with Thy baptism am crucified and buried. I suffer for Thy sake, that I may reign with Thee; for Thy sake I die, that I may live in Thee: accept me offered out of longing to Thee as a spotless sacrifice. Lord, save our souls through her intercessions, since Thou art great in mercy.
