Saint Cyril was born in Alexandria in 375 AD. and came from a wealthy family. His uncle Theophilos, archbishop of Alexandria, took care of the saint's education and taught him the Bible, which Cyril handled admirably. He studied at the famous Catechism School and at the age of 18 he went to the Monastery of Saint Makarios, where he practiced asceticism for five years. Returning to his hometown, he placed himself in the service of the Church. When Theophilos passed away, he was ordained archbishop and worked diligently to combat paganism and heresies. He faced with vigor the sect of Monophysitism led by Archbishop Nestorius of Constantinople. He was a central figure in the Ecumenical Council that took place in Ephesus in 431 AD, which condemned Nestorius and deposed him from the patriarchal throne.

Cyril, having completed his work, slept in peace on June 9, 444 AD. His memory is honored by the Orthodox Church on June 9 and together with his predecessor Saint Athanasius on January 18. Fragment of the Holy Relic of St. Cyril is located in the Monastery of the Great Cave of Kalavrita.
