Saint Thekla came from Iconium in Asia Minor and her parents were pagans. Her conversion from paganism to Christianity took place when she met the Apostle Paul and heard his preachings at the house of Onesiphorus. When her mother and her pagan fiance was informed of the incident, they snitched the Apostle Paul to the ruler of the region who expelled him.

Saint Thekla left her paternal home and followed the Apostle Paul to Antioch of Pisidia and then to Myra of Lycia. She suffered many tortures and for this reason she was named First Martyr. Eventually, she took refuge on Mount Kalamon where she slept peacefully at the age of ninety. Fragments of the Holy Relic of the Saint are found in the Monasteries of Great Lavra and Dionysiou of Mount Athos. The Orthodox Christian Church commemorates her on September 24 of each year.

Apolytikion of Saint Thekla the Protomartyr

Third Tone

All aflame with love for your Creator, * from the teachings of the sacred preacher, * you disregarded as fleeting all things mundane. * And being bold in the face of the penalties, * you gave yourself as a beautiful gift to God. * Thekla, glorious companion of the Apostle Paul, * we pray you entreat your Bridegroom, Christ, * and ask Him to grant us His great mercy.
