Saint Marina came from Antioch of Pisidia. As soon as she was born she was orphaned by her mother and her pagan father sent her to a woman to breastfeed her. Marina grew up in a Christian environment and heard about the martyrdom of Christians by pagans, a fact that moved her deeply. At the age of 15, she confessed her faith in Christ and as result her father disinherited her.

The year 270 AD, the prefect Olivrius arrived in Antioch. As soon as he was informed that the daughter of the pagan priest was a Christian, he ordered her arrest. The Saint, in front of the prefect, bravely confessed that she was a Christian and suffered severe torture. On the last day of her martyrdom, she reappeared in Olivrius. The crowd was surprised to see a girl who had no trace of torture, a fact that forced many to believe in Christ. Consequently, the prefect ordered the beheading of the Saint.

Saint Marina is the patron saint of Leros and Ilioupoli. Her remains are kept in Athens and her hand in the Vatopedi Monastery of Mount Athos. The Orthodox Christian Church commemorates her on July 17 of each year.

Apolytikion of Saint Marina the Great Martyr

Fourth Tone

O Lord Jesus, unto Thee Thy lamb doth cry with a great voice: O my Bridegroom, Thee I love; and seeking Thee, I now contest, and with Thy baptism am crucified and buried. I suffer for Thy sake, that I may reign with Thee; for Thy sake I die, that I may live in Thee: accept me offered out of longing to Thee as a spotless sacrifice. Lord, save our souls through her intercessions, since Thou art great in mercy.
