Saint Euthymius was born in 377 AD. in Melitene of Armenia. His parents named him Efthymios because his birth gave them joy and happiness. At a very young age he was orphaned by his father and his mother sent him to Bishop Eutroius to educate him. At the age of 28 he was ordained presbyter and then went to Jerusalem where he lived an ascetic life in the cave of Saint Theoktistos. With his rich spiritual gifts and speech he forced many heretics to embrace the Orthodox Christian faith, among them the Byzantine Empress Eudokia.

Saint Euthymius became known for his strict ascetic life and for the many miracles he performed in the region of Palestine. He slept peacefully in 473 AD. at the age of 97 and was proclaimed Great for his offering to the Church. He is considered the protector of couples who have problems in childbearing. Fragments of the Holy Relic of the Saint are found in the Monasteries of Megisti Lavra and Iveron of Mount Athos. His memory is honored by the Orthodox Christian Church on January 20 of each year.

Apolytikion of Saint Euthymius the Great

Fourth Tone

Be glad, O barren one, that hast not given birth; be of good cheer, thou that hast not travailed; for a man of desires hath multiplied thy children of the Spirit, having planted them in piety and reared them in continence to the perfection of the virtues. By his prayers, O Christ our God, make our life peaceful.
