Mount Athos weathered lithography (icon) of Saint Isaac the Syrian in pine wood with carved decoration.

Saint Isaac was born in the early 7th century AD in Beit Katraye, Qatar. At a young age he went with his brother to the Monastery of St. Matthew, where he studied the Holy Scriptures with great zeal and followed the ascetic life. His fame spread to Nineveh in Mesopotamia, with the result that Archbishop Givartzis ordained him as a bishop. From the position of bishop he guided his spiritual flock with great wisdom. After a short time, however, he resigned and retired to Mount Matut.

According to Saint Isaac, faith is the first stage of liberation from the passions. The purified and peaceful man will become for all a living image of God's love and His mercy. His speech is the necessary guide for each person, so that they can walk safely to God. At the initiative of Saint Paisios of Mount Athos, the Orthodox Christian Church commemorates him on September 28 of each year.
