Saint Jeremiah was born in the city of Anathoth, near Jerusalem, in 650 BC and came from a wealthy priestly family. He receives the prophetic gift at a very young age and foretells the destruction of Jerusalem. He was distinguished for his anti-heretic actions. The grieving prophet, as he was called, blasted the rich with his words for the oppression of the poor and the people for their moral downfall. He was exiled to Egypt and led to martyrdom by stoning from his compatriots.

The whole life of the prophet Jeremiah was a constant martyrdom. His ascetic life ranked him among the great biblical prophets, who paved the way for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Orthodox Christian Church commemorates him on May 1 of each year.
