The Apostle and Evangelist Luke came from Antioch in Syria. He was Greek and used the Greek language as much as anyone else, as shown in his Gospel and Acts. He was a doctor by profession and knew the art of painting very well. Initially he was a pagan and his conversion to the Christian faith took place as soon as he met the Apostle Paul. He was a close collaborator of Apostle and followed him on many tours. After the martyrdom of the Apostle Paul, we do not know exactly the life of Luke. According to Nikiforos Kallistos, Lucas died a martyr's death when they hanged him on an olive tree in Ephesus at the age of 80.

The Evangelist is the patron saint of Lamia and the protector of artists, doctors, surgeons, students and butchers. The Orthodox Christian Church celebrates his memory on October 18 of each year.
