Saint Mammas was born in Gangra of Paphlagonia in 260 AD. by Christian parents, the Theodotus and Roufina. When he was still an infant, he was orphaned and raised by a wealthy Christian woman. According to tradition, the Saint used to call her "mama" and for this reason he was named Mammas. At the age of 15, Mammas was arrested by pagans for vigorously professing his faith in Christ. He was subjected to horrific torture. He was thrown into a burning furnace and to the wild beasts to devour him. But Mammas was miraculously saved. Finally his enemies decided to execute him with a trident and in this way the Saint martyred and surrendered his soul to the Lord.

Saint Mammas is considered the protector of the shepherds, because he managed to tame all these wild beasts, but also the protector of the adopted children, since he too was orphaned from infancy and was adopted. He is the patron saint of Morphou Cyprus and his memory is honored by the Orthodox Church on September 2 of each year.

Apolytikion of Saint Mammas the Martyr

Fourth Tone

Thy Martyr, O Lord, in his courageous contest for Thee received the prize of the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. For since he possessed Thy strength, he cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by his prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.
