Saint Nicodemus the Hagiorite, known as Nikolaos Kallivourtzis, was born in 1749 AD. in Naxos and studied at the Evangelical School of Smyrna from 1765 to 1770 AD. After working as the secretary of the metropolitan of Naxos, he became a monk in the Monastery of Dionysiou on Mount Athos under the name Nikodimos. He was a leading figure of the religious movement of the Kollyvades together with Saint Athanasios of Paros.
Nicodemus published more than 100 works, most importantly "Philokalia" which was translated into many languages and published many times. He slept peacefully in 1809 AD. and was buried in Karyes of Mount Athos. The Holy Skull of the Saint is located in the Kelli of Saint George Skourtaion on Mount Athos. His memory is honored by the Orthodox Church on July 14 of each year.
