Saint Onuphrius came from Persia and from a very young age he had the desire to be completely devoted to God. Initially he joined a convent where he lived for several years. Then, he decided to go to the desert for more spiritual exercise and physical restraint. In the desert he met Hermia who led him to a hut under a huge palm tree.

In this hut the Saint lived until the end of his life and gained a great reputation, as a result of which many hermits visited him to receive his advice. Onoufrios died peacefully and was buried by Saint Paphnutius under the huge palm tree. The Orthodox Christian Church celebrates his memory on June 12 of each year.

Apolytikion of Saint Onuphrius of Egypt

First Tone

Thou didst prove to be a citizen of the desert, an angel in the flesh, and a wonderworker, O Onuphrius, our God-bearing Father. By fasting, vigil, and prayer thou didst obtain heavenly gifts, and thou healest the sick and the souls of them that have recourse to thee with faith. Glory to Him that hath given thee strength. Glory to Him that hath crowned thee. Glory to Him that worketh healings for all through thee.
