Mount Athos weathered lithography (icon) of Saint Seraphim of Sarov in pine wood with carved decoration.

Saint Seraphim of Sarov was born in the city of Kursk, Russia in 1759 AD. At the age of 19 he went to the monastery of Sarov, in order to dedicate his whole soul to God. During his stay at the monastery he became seriously ill but he was miraculously healed. Prochorus, as was the original name of the Saint, was ordained a deacon and at the age of 34 a priest.

After his ordination as a priest, Seraphim retired to the desert for 16 years. There he devoted himself entirely to Bible study, practice and prayer. While practicing in the desert, he was attacked by robbers who seriously injured him. The Saint was miraculously healed again and in 1810 AD. returned to the Monastery of Sarov. At the age of 66, the Virgin Mary instructed him to dedicate himself completely to his fellow human beings. He gained a great reputation and gave spiritual advice and joy to those who visited him.

On January 2, 1833 AD. he was found dead in front of the icon of the Virgin Mary. He was officially proclaimed a Saint in 1903 AD. The Holy Relics of St. Seraphim of Sarov are located in the Diveyevo Monastery in Russia. The Orthodox Christian Church commemorates him on January 2 of each year.

Troparion of Saint Seraphim of Sarov

Fourth Tone

Thou didst love Christ from thy youth, O blessed one, and longing to work for Him alone thou didst struggle in the wilderness with constant prayer and labor. With penitent heart and great love for Christ thou wast favored by the Mother of God. Wherefore we cry to thee: Save us by thy prayers, O Seraphim our righteous Father.
