Saint Sergius of Radonezh was born in 1314 AD. in the city of Rostov of Russia. Due to the oppressive conditions that prevailed, he was forced to leave his native town and move to Radonezh with his family. Later, he decided to pursue ascetic life and isolated himself in a forest north of Moscow. He was then ordained a priest and abbot of the Holy Trinity Monastery. His fame spread quickly and as a result, in 1378 AD., he was proposed to him to assume the position of metropolitan of Kiev and all Russia, a position which he refused.

Saint Sergius of Radonezh is considered the organizer of monasticism in Russia and her spiritual protector. He slept peacefully in 1392 AD. at the age of 78 years. The Orthodox Christian Church commemorates him on September 25 of each year.

Apolytikion of Saint Sergius of Radonezh the Righteous Father

Fourth Tone

As an athlete in virtue, and as a true soldier of Christ our God, thou didst struggle mightily against the passions in this temporal life, and thou wast a model for thy disciples in psalmody, vigils, and fasts. Wherefore, the Most Holy Spirit dwelt in thee, and thou wast radiantly adorned by His Grace. But since thou hast boldness with the Holy Trinity, remember the flock which thou didst gather, O wise one; and forget not to visit thy children as thou didst promise, O Sergius our holy Father.
