Mount Athos weathered lithography (icon) of Saint Socrates the Martyr in pine wood with carved decoration.
Saint Socrates was a hieromartyr of the Christian church and lived in Nicomedia in the 3rd century AD. At that time, the king was Alexander the Great who had begun the persecution of Christians in the area. Socrates as a priest and with the help of a young and pious woman, Saint Theodote, guided the flock and taught them the Word of God.
For their action, the Saints were arrested, submitted to horrific torture and martyred in Ankara by beheading. The Orthodox Christian Church commemorates them on October 21 of each year.
