Saint Stamatios was born in the village of Agios Georgios Nileias in Pelion. The year 1680 AD arrived in the village an Agas to collect for the Sultan the taxes from the inhabitants of the area. Because Aga's requirements was irrational, Stamatios decided to go to Istanbul with a group of residents of his homeland to ask for tax relief. The Turks, however, reacted with violence and beat the Saint and his compatriots. Stamatios was taken to trial where he confessed his Christian faith, as a result of which he was tortured and finally beheaded in 1680 AD.

The Orthodox Christian Church honors the memory of Saint Stamatios, the New Martyr from Volos, on the 16th of August of each year.
