Saint Themistocles lived in the 3rd century AD. in Myra of Lycia in Asia Minor and was a shepherd by profession. At that time the emperor Decius had started fierce persecutions against the Christians and had given an order to the ruler of Lycia, Asclepius, to arrest all the Christians. The ruler's soldiers, while searching the mountain to arrest a Christian named Dioscorides, they met Themistocles. The kind-hearted shepherd was asked if he knew where Dioscorides was hiding. The Saint did not answer the question but confessed his faith in Christ.
Themistocles was arrested and was taken to Asclepius who ordered that he must be tortured in a horrible way. Finally, after severe trials, the Saint surrendered his soul to the Lord in 251 AD. Churches have been erected in his honor in Spata, Attica and Plomari in Lesvos. His memory is celebrated by the Orthodox Christian Church on December 21 of each year.
