Gold foil printed icon of Panagia Paramythia (Holy Monastery of Vatopedi) on Hagiography wood.
The icon of Virgin Mary Paramythia is located in the chapel to the left of the central gate of the katholikon of the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi. The icon was not made by human hand but by Divine Grace when the Virgin Mary intervened miraculously and saved the Monastery from the pirate raid in the year 1320 AD. According to tradition, the icon of the Virgin Mary came to life and Her voice warned the Abbot and the Fathers not to open the gate of the Monastery because the pirates had surrounded to plunder it. Panagia Paramythia was named Comforter because the sweet expression on her face calms and comforts the souls of people.
The Synaxis of the Holy Theotokos Paramythia is celebrated on January 21 of each year.
