Saint Theophilus the New Martyr was born in Zakynthos in 1617 AD. and was a sailor by profession. Refusing to work on a Turkish ship, he was slandered by a Turkish captain on the charge of wearing a Turkish fez. He was brought before a judge where he confessed his Christian faith, as a result of which he tortured severely.

Theophilos managed to escape from the hands of the Turks and went to Samos. When he returned to Chios after some time, he was recognized by the Turks and taken to trial again. Unwavering in his faith in Christ, he was sentenced to death by fire. He died a martyr in 1635 AD. The Orthodox Christian Church commemorates him on July 24 of each year.
