Mount Athos weathered lithography (icon) of Saint Glykeria the Holy Martyr in pine wood with carved decoration.

Saint Glykeria was born in the 2nd century AD. in Trajanopolis during the reign of Antoninus Pius. She was the daughter of Makarios, a high-ranking Roman officer. From a very young age she embraced the Christian faith. At a heathen festival, when Sabine the Governor of Trajanopolis was offering sacrifice, Saint Glyceria entered the temple and declared herself to be a handmaid of Christ. Then, she destroyed a pagan statue and the pagans led her to ruthless torture and imprisonment for many days.

Glykeria was not intimidated by her torture and, guided by her faith, appeared again, in excellent condition, in front of Sabine, who was surprised. Eventually, the Saint was thrown at the lions and surrendered her soul to God. Her holy relic was received by the Bishop of Heraklion Domitios and placed in a decent place near the city, where later a majestic temple was built. The Church commemorates her on May 13 of each year.

Apolytikion of Saint Glykeria the Martyr

Fourth Tone

O Lord Jesus, unto Thee Thy lamb doth cry with a great voice: O my Bridegroom, Thee I love; and seeking Thee, I now contest, and with Thy baptism am crucified and buried. I suffer for Thy sake, that I may reign with Thee; for Thy sake I die, that I may live in Thee: accept me offered out of longing to Thee as a spotless sacrifice. Lord, save our souls through her intercessions, since Thou art great in mercy.
