Saint Gregory Palamas was a great father of the Church and an ecumenical teacher. He was born in 1926 in Istanbul from prominent parents and studied grammar, philosophy and rhetoric. At the age of twenty he left for Mount Athos and became a monk from Elder Nicodemus of the monastery of Vatopedi. Later he went to the convent of the Great Lavra, where he remained for three years. In 1326 AD he was ordained a priest in the Skete of Veria and in 1333 AD. is appointed abbot of the monastery of Esfigmenos. He was then elected metropolitan of Thessaloniki and remained on the archbishopric throne until his death in 1359 AD.

Gregory Palamas the Miracle Worker was a distinguished theologian of Hesychasm and his memory is honored by the Orthodox Christian Church on November 14 of each year. The holy relics of the Saint are kept in the metropolitan sanctuary of Thessaloniki, of which he is a co-patron, together with the holy great martyr Demetrios the Myrovlitis.
