Saint Tamara the Great Queen of Georgia was born around 1165 AD. and came from the ancient Georgian dynasty of Bagradid. In 1178 AD reigned with her father George III. Tamara's reign became known in Georgian history as the Golden Age. The Saint was distinguished for her great reverence and her missionary work. Continuing the work of her grandfather, Saint David (honored on January 26), she spread Christianity throughout Georgia and built temples and monasteries. In 1204 AD, the ruler of the Sultanate of Ruma, Rukn-en-Din, sent an order to the Queen Tamara, according to which Georgia should renounce her faith in Christ and embrace Islam.

Saint Tamara refused and in a historic battle near Vasiani, the Georgian army defeated the Muslims. The wise and just reign of Saint Tamara gave her the love of her people. The Saint spent the last years of her life in the Cave Monastery of Bargia. Her cell was connected to the church by a window, through which she could pray to God during the Holy Services. He slept peacefully in 1213 AD. The Orthodox Christian Church honors its memory on May 1 of each year.
