Mount Athos serigraph (icon) of Saint Anna, the Mother of the Theotokos, on wood with real gold leaves.
Dimensions: 20x15cm. / 30x22cm. / 40x30cm.
Saint Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary, came from a priestly generation and at an advanced age she married Saint Joachim in Galilee. Anna was very upset because she could not have a child and this fact had stigmatized her. The married couple begged God with warm and wholehearted prayers to give them a child. Their prayers were answered and the virtuous Joachim and Anna gave birth to the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus Christ.
Saint Anna, after giving birth to the Virgin Mary, dedicated her to the Temple and spent the rest of her life with fasting, prayers and giving alms to the poor. According to tradition, Anna surrendered her soul to God at the age of 69. Parts of the Holy Relics of the Mother of God exist in the Mount Athos Skete of Saint Anna (Monastery of Great Lavra) and in the Holy Temple of Saint Anna in Katerini. The Conception of the Theotokos by Saint Anna is honored by the Orthodox Christian Church on December 9 of each year.
Apolytikion of Conception of the Theotokos by Saint Anna
Fourth Tone
Against all hope, the bonds of barrenness are loosed today. For, God has hearkened unto Joachim and Anna clearly promising that they would bear a godly maiden. He who commanded the angel to cry out to her, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you," will be born of her, the infinite One Himself, becoming man.
