Saint Catherine was born in Alexandria of Egypt and lived at the time when Maximian was the emperor of Rome. Catherine was distinguished for her beauty and rare wisdom. In a discussion she had with 50 philosophers of the time, she managed to persuade them to embrace the Christian faith. In fact, she succeeded in converting the emperor's wife and many of his soldiers to Christianity.
As soon as Maximian was informed of the incident, he ordered the arrest of the Saint and her death sentence. Catherine was martyred by beheading and her remains were later transported to Sinai where the monastery of Saint Catherine was built. She is considered the patron saint of farmers and the patron saint of Katerini, Greece. Fragments of the Holy Relic of the Saint are found in the Monastery of Chilandari on Mount Athos. The Orthodox Christian Church celebrates her memory on November 25 of each year.
Apolytikion of Saint Catherine the Great Martyr
Plagal of the First Tone
Let us praise the most auspicious bride of Christ, the divine Katherine, protectress of Sinai, our aid and our help. For, she brilliantly silenced the eloquence of the impious by the sword of the spirit, and now, crowned as a martyr, she asks great mercy for all.
