Mount Athos weathered lithography (icon) of Saint Kalliope the Martyr in pine wood with carved decoration.
Saint Calliope lived in the 3rd century AD during the period when Decius was emperor of Rome. Because of her natural beauty, she accepted many marriage proposals but she rejected them because she wanted to dedicate her life to God. When the great persecution of the Christians began, she was arrested and brought to trial.
In front of the local ruler she refused to embrace the idols and vigorously confessed her faith in Christ. She was subjected to horrific torture and was beheaded, surrendering her soul to the Lord. Her memory is honored by the Orthodox Christian Church on June 8 each year.
