Saint Matrona was born and lived in Thessaloniki during the period of the first Christian persecutions. He came from a family of devout Christians and was a member of the Church of Thessalonica. Matrona worked as a servant to a wealthy Judean woman named Pantilla who was a devout fanatic of Judaism. The Saint did not reveal her Christian faith and went secretly to the Church while her lady was in the Jewish Synagogue.

The secret of Matrona was revealed when a slave accused her in Pantilla that she was a believer in Christianity. Pantilla hated Christians to death and ordered to flog Matrona and to throw her into prison in chains. The Saint surrendered her spirit to the Lord after many days of torture and beatings. Her remains were reverently buried near the Egnatia Highway and later Bishop Alexander carried them inside the city. The Orthodox Christian Church commemorates her on March 27 of each year.

Apolytikion of Saint Matrona of Thessalonica

Fourth Tone

O Lord Jesus, unto Thee Thy lamb doth cry with a great voice: O my Bridegroom, Thee I love; and seeking Thee, I now contest, and with Thy baptism am crucified and buried. I suffer for Thy sake, that I may reign with Thee; for Thy sake I die, that I may live in Thee: accept me offered out of longing to Thee as a spotless sacrifice. Lord, save our souls through her intercessions, since Thou art great in mercy.
