The Holy Myrrh-bearers were those women who attended the teaching and activity of Jesus Christ, anointed His body with perfumes at His burial, and were the first to be informed of the joyful message of the Resurrection of the Lord. In the Gospels among the Myrrh-bearers are mentioned the following names: Salome, wife of Zebedee and mother of the apostles James and John, Mary of Klopas, mother of the apostle James the Little, Joanna of Chouza, commissioner of King Herod and Mary Magdalene.

The Holy Myrrh-bearers vigorously proclaimed the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ and inspired with their action many Fathers of the Church. The Saints are honored on the second Sunday after Easter, the so-called Myrrh-bearing Sunday.
