The prophet Daniel, whose name means "my judge is God" or "God judges", lived in the late 7th to early 6th century BC, with the main period of activity being that of Nebuchadnezzar (605-562) until the third year of the reign of Cyrus (538-529). Daniel came from an aristocratic family, and according to some, he came from the royal family of David. He had the gift of divination and prophecy and took a great position in the court of Nebuchadnezzar, along with the three young Jews, Ananias, Azariah, and Mishael. Also, explained to the king of Babylon two dreams of prophetic significance.

Nebuchadnezzar once asked the people to worship his golden idol. Ananias, Azariah and Mishael refused, so they threw them into the furnace of fire, from which they came out safe and sound. When Cyrus ascended the royal throne he asked the people not to pray for thirty days. But because Daniel was still praying to God, he was thrown into the lions pit, from where, with God's help, he came out unscathed. Surprised by the miracle, the king kept Daniel in his court, where he remained and died at an old age, probably in Susa.

The prophetic book of the Bible contains prophetic visions and stories of how Daniel and his three companions ("the three children in the furnace") were saved by divine intervention. His memory is honored by the Christian Church on December 17.

Apolytikion of Prophet Daniel

Second Tone

Great are the accomplishments of faith. In the fountain of flame the three Holy Youths rejoiced as though they were resting by the waters. And the Prophet Daniel showed himself to be a shepherd to the lions, as though they were sheep. Through their prayers O Christ our God, save our souls.
