The Prophet Jonah lived in the days of the kings Amaziah and Jeroboam and was the son of Amathi. God commanded him to go to the city of Nineveh and try to bring its inhabitants to the right path. Jonah did not follow the Lord's command and decided to be transported by ship to Tharsis of Spain. During the voyage a great storm broke out and the Prophet was found guilty of this event, as a result of which he was thrown into the sea and swallowed by a large sea-monster. Jonah prayed to God and the sea-monster brought him safe and sound to the land.
After this adventure, the Saint obeyed the divine command and went to Nineveh where he prophesied its destruction. The Ninevites repented and were eventually saved from destruction. Jonah is mentioned as a prophet in the Old Testament and his memory is celebrated by the Orthodox Christian Church on September 21 of each year.
Apolytikion of Saint Jonah the Prophet
Third Tone
To the Ninevites, thou wast a trumpet, blaring fearful threats of Heaven's judgments, at the which they repented with all their hearts; and from the sea-monster's belly didst thou foreshow the Lord's divine Resurrection to all the world. Hence, entreat Him to bring out of corruption all of us, who honour thee, O Jonah, as a friend of God.
