Mount Athos weathered lithography (icon) of Saint Kassiani the Hymnographer in pine wood with carved decoration.

Saint Kassiani was born in Constantinople between 805 and 810 AD. The Saint had a noble origin and stood out for her beauty and grace. The emperor Theophilos was impressed from her beauty and decided to make her queen and husband but finally he chose Theodora as empress. The Saint then became a nun and founded a monastery in Constantinople, in 843 AD, in which she became the first abbess. Later he traveled to Italy and Crete. He died in Kasos around 865 AD. Her body was placed in a marble shrine that survives to this day.

Saint Kassiani is the most prominent hymn writer of Orthodox Church. About 45 works are attributed to her and the famous troparion which is sung in the temples on the night of Holy Tuesday. The words of the troparion are unfortunately attributed by some to Kassiani herself, with the consequence that she is mistakenly considered a sinner. On the contrary, there was nothing sinful in her life and she devoted herself completely to the service of God. Her memory is celebrated by the Orthodox Christian Church on September 7 of each year.
